The Bubster loves this!

I'm just so pleased that my little son loves old classic films. Maybe I am a good influence after all? He thinks this scene from the Marx Brothers film Duck Soup is just hilarious. He's been watching it over and over this week.

I've heard parents say, "Oh my child won't watch old B/W films. We just don't bother." I guess I look at it differently. When we watch an old film, it's an opportunity to step into history and get a feel for the time period in which something is made. Sometimes we have very deep discussions about social change or what might have been going on historically to influence the storyline, like in the case of the Marx Brothers with their origins in Vaudeville. It's possible, even with an almost 5 year old!

And it's fun to break out the popcorn and have a few belly laughs while we are at it. I'm looking forward to the day when we attempt to recreate this mirror gag ourselves.

very non pc to say it, by my very dramatic B2 was a B&W betty boop fiend from about age 3...

Yeah! Betty Boop! :-)

My young fellow likes the Little Rascals. Which also is not very pc. But there is something about that which I like - to appreciate something whether pc or not!

I've been thinking about hunting down some old Popeye stuff. I've seen some box sets on Amazon. Also probably fits in the above category. ;-)

that's strange you're mentioning this today. `Last night we watch "lover come back" Rock Hudson and Doris Day, it's such a classic and my husband said, he like to watch that with this kids one day. Those films were old even when I was a kid, as are the popeye etc. So chances are they'll like them too. I think maybe it's like with so many other things if you do them with your kids they like them, too.

My two are fans of "Mighty Mouse" which is an old cartoon series. (D's parents gave them a DVD of old episodes.) I absolutely LOVE old black & white movies. The first time the kids saw a bit of one they said "Hey, where's all the colour gone?" We've been getting into Charlie Chaplin too...
Magnus is a clever young boy - with two fabbo parents I know he will be pretty well rounded in his education!!!
